YouTube → Settings → Background & Downloads → Background play → “Always on” / “Headphones or external speakers.” YouTube Music offers background play by default with Music Premium. Check battery optimization — disable “Restrict background activity.”
Android → Settings → Apps → YouTube → Picture-in-Picture — enable. Play a video → press Home — the player shrinks to PiP (audio stays on, screen on). Important: music videos in the official YouTube app require Premium for background audio; PiP with screen on is fine.
Background playback in official YouTube apps is locked behind Premium — that’s by design. In a browser, you can listen via PiP with the screen on. It’s a compromise, but it’s legal and safe.

MIUI: Settings → Apps → YouTube → Picture-in-Picture — enable. Also enable PiP for your browser if you use it. This option is sometimes buried — use the settings search if needed.

Keep the tab active and use your OS media keys. For music.youtube.com, enable Web Media Controls in your OS/browser and keep the tab open. Offline playback on PC — Premium only (downloads inside the app, not as files).

Enable PiP in system settings and in YouTube. Turn off battery optimization / low power mode. Switch networks, update the app/browser. Verify your subscription status and regional availability. On Xiaomi: set battery to “No restrictions,” enable auto-start, and grant media control permissions.
